Custom Home Building in Fort Hunt, VA
Build Your Fort Hunt Home. Build With Character.
Fort Hunt is one of the Fairfax County communities that people discover and never leave. Tucked along the Potomac River south of Old Town Alexandria, it offers a rare combination: a strong neighborhood identity, mature tree-lined streets, proximity to the George Washington Parkway, and a community anchored by Fort Hunt Elementary and the families who rally around it. It’s a place where block parties still happen and neighbors look out for each other.
At Character Companies, we design and build classic custom homes that belong in the neighborhoods they’re part of. In Fort Hunt, that means architecture that respects the community’s established residential character while delivering the space, quality, and thoughtful detail that today’s families need from a home they plan to stay in for the long run.
Whether you’re building on a lot you already own, pursuing a teardown-and-rebuild on one of Fort Hunt’s mid-century properties, or working with our team to find the right opportunity in the area, we bring an advisory-driven, design-build approach rooted in deep familiarity with this part of Fairfax County.
Why Build Custom in Fort Hunt?
Fort Hunt’s appeal has always been rooted in community and location — close to the river, minutes from Old Town and D.C., and surrounded by the kind of neighborhood fabric that’s hard to replicate. But the housing stock is predominantly mid-century, with many homes built in the 1940s through 1960s as part of the area’s post-war residential expansion. Those homes served their era well, but they often lack the square footage, open layouts, and mechanical systems that families expect today.
Building custom gives you the opportunity to get exactly what you want in the neighborhood you love, without the compromises that come with buying existing. In Fort Hunt, where the community is tightly held and families buy with the intention of staying, a well-designed custom home isn’t just a lifestyle decision — it’s a smart long-term investment in one of the most stable and desirable pockets of Fairfax County.
A new custom home can yield a return of roughly 100–115% on construction costs, compared to the 70–80% return typical of a full remodel. When you pair that financial advantage with the livability of a home designed specifically for your family, building new makes compelling sense.
Our Approach to Custom Homes in Fort Hunt
Character Companies is a full-service design-build firm headquartered in nearby Alexandria. That means your designer, project manager, and construction team all work together from day one under a single contract — keeping your budget, timeline, and vision aligned from start to finish.
We don’t believe custom should mean overwhelming. Instead, we offer a guided, curated process that puts you in control without the stress of endless open-ended decisions. You’ll start by selecting from one of our thoughtfully designed floor plans, then personalize it to fit the way you live — whether that means designing a generous mudroom and rear entry for a family with kids and pets, adding a screened porch that takes advantage of Fort Hunt’s wooded lots, or building out a finished basement with a recreation room and guest suite to maximize usable square footage.
Our homes are known for their timeless character: classic, traditional architecture that fits naturally into established neighborhoods. Every detail is considered — from layered wallpaper and curated hardware selections to detailed millwork, inviting entry doors, and thoughtful ambient lighting using Visual Comfort fixtures.
Three Custom Home Lines to Guide Your Budget
To make the design process approachable and transparent, we offer three curated finish lines — each tailored to different budgets and levels of finishes:
Character Classic — A strong foundation of quality craftsmanship and carefully selected finishes. Construction costs start at $650,000.
Character Signature — Elevated materials, additional design details, and enhanced finishes for homeowners looking to step up their selections.
Character Legacy — Our highest tier, offering premium materials and the finest level of architectural detail and interior design.
Each line is designed to guide your decisions and protect your budget, so you always know where your investment stands.
Fixed-Price Confidence
Unlike many custom builders that rely on cost-plus contracts, Character Companies is a fixed-cost company. From the very beginning, you’ll know what your project will cost. We believe that transparency and peace of mind shouldn’t be optional — they should be built into the process.
Our pricing approach eliminates the back-and-forth and surprise adjustments that cost-plus contracts typically bring. You can plan confidently and focus on the excitement of watching your home come to life — not the invoices.

The Build Process
From your first consultation to the moment we hand you the keys, our process is designed to be transparent, organized, and enjoyable.
Step 1 — Lot Feasibility. Whether you already own a lot in Fort Hunt, are considering a teardown-and-rebuild, or need help finding the right property, we’ll start by evaluating the site’s possibilities and any limitations. Our team is familiar with Fairfax County’s zoning and permitting requirements as they apply to the Fort Hunt area, including considerations around lot grading, mature trees, and proximity to the Potomac.
Step 2 — Phase I Design. Select from one of our floor plans and customize according to your budget, guided by our three custom home lines: Classic, Signature, and Legacy.
Step 3 — Phase II Design. Finalize your selections with our interior designer and get a clear picture of final pricing for your home.
Step 4 — Permits. Once your architectural plan and grading plan are complete, we submit for permits.
Step 5 — Construction. During the build, your dedicated Project Manager will schedule framing and drywall walkthroughs to keep you informed and involved throughout the process.
Step 6 — Closing. Before we hand the home to you, we’ll do a final walkthrough and discuss the warranty plans included with every Character house.
The typical timeline from initial design consultation to completion runs between 12 and 24 months, depending on the scope and complexity of your project.
